Process settings

  • Layer height: 0.2 mm
  • Walls: 2
  • Infill: 12%
  • Orientation: Flat side down, bricks up

Keep it at 0.20 mm layers. The brick tops are set on 0.2 mm layer lines, so 0.28 or adaptive layers will mess up the tops. I sliced these in OrcaSlicer for a Creality K1 Max with a 0.4 nozzle and Creality Generic PLA. Any FDM printer works. Scarf seam, avoid crossing walls on, 0.3 mm z-hop, 5 top and 3 bottom layers, no brim. Full K1 Max plate is 72 tiles, 24 of each pattern: 148.21 g and 7h 9m 51s. That's about 2.06 g and 6 minutes a tile. The plate 3mf is in the files and it's already sliced.

Material notes

  • Recommended: PLA
  • Also works with: If you get strings in the joints, raise the minimum travel before retracting from 1 mm to 2 mm. Then the short hops over the mortar lines skip the retract and any strings end up in the mortar where you can't see them.

Dry it first. Each tile does about 416 retractions, so wet filament strings.

Assembly notes

No glue or hardware. The tiles butt together on a shared flat edge and turn in 60 degree steps. They're about 3 mm thick, so don't flex them.

Other

Old brick walkway tiles I made for my own table. 35 mm point to point, 30.3 mm across the flats, about 3 mm tall. Three patterns (herringbone, running bond, basket weave), all inside the same brick border so they mix together.

Every tile has the same edge, so any two line up with a normal mortar gap. No magnets or clips, they just sit next to each other.

I designed these myself in Blender. Printed them on my K1 Max at 0.2 layers, no supports.

They take a drybrush really well. I do a dark basecoat, then grey, then a light bone color on the edges.

Files are free to download and remix. If you don't want to print them yourself you can order prints here.
